Guide · printer fix

Cover open

The printer's lid is not fully latched. Most thermal printers stop printing in that state without a beep or a light, which is why a cover a millimetre open costs so many people an afternoon. The register says it out loud and holds the tickets in the queue until it clicks shut.

Whatever the printer does, the sale is already saved — the register writes the bill to its own database first and queues the paper second. The full nine-symptom checklist covers the rest.

Most likely cause

The lid is not latched — usually since the last roll change.

  • It was closed but not clicked. A cover pressed in the middle can hold at one end and stay open at the other. The printer treats anything short of both catches as open.
  • The roll is fouling the catch. A roll seated too high, or a loose tail of paper, keeps the lid from seating. It looks closed and reports open, which is exactly the confusing case.
The fix

Do this first.

1

Open the cover fully and reseat the roll

Do not just press harder. Lift the lid all the way, sit the roll flat in the well, and pull a few centimetres of paper out through the slot so the tail is not trapped under the catch.

2

Press both ends down until each one clicks

Two catches, two clicks. This is the whole fix in most cases, and the reason a cover pressed once in the middle keeps reporting open.

3

Let the queue drain

Settings → Printers & KDS shows the tickets that were held. The moment the printer reports itself ready they print in order on their own; Retry now on a row pushes one ahead of the schedule if you are in a hurry.

On the register

What the printer's row says.

Every printer you have added has a row in Settings → Printers & KDS, and the row carries its own status in words rather than a green dot. These are the exact words for this one.

  • While it is wrong: “Cover open”, with the line “Close the cover until it clicks.” Printing pauses while it lasts and the tickets wait rather than failing against a printer that cannot take them.
  • Once it is fixed: “Connected”, and the held tickets print in order with nothing to press.

The printer reports this itself — the register is repeating the lid switch's own answer, not inferring it from a failed job. That is why it can be this specific instead of showing a generic error.

The Counter Printer row in Settings → Printers & KDS reading Connected, with Check printer, Test print, Test connection, Edit and Remove beneath it.

The row once the cover clicks shut on both catches — Connected, nothing else to press.

Nothing is lost

Printing what was missed.

  • Nothing is lost while it is paused. Held tickets keep their place and their retry budget. There is nothing to re-fire from the order.
  • The sale was written before the paper. Bills go into the register's own database first, so a lid nobody pressed properly can only ever delay a slip.
  • Reprint by hand if you want it now. Reprint last receipt and Reprint last KOT sit in Settings → Printers & KDS, and every queue row carries Retry now.
Straight answers

Cover open — the questions that follow.

The cover is closed and it still says Cover open.
Open it fully and press it down firmly at both ends until you hear a click on each side — the middle can latch while a corner has not. If it still reports open, a scrap of paper or dust is sitting in the latch: switch the printer off, open the cover, clear it, and reseat the roll so it cannot sit under the catch.
Why does a slightly open cover stop the printer completely?
The print head has to be pressed against the paper and the platen roller to make a mark at all, and the lid is what applies that pressure. A printer that printed with the cover open would produce blank paper and risk damaging the head, so it refuses instead.
Does the register keep sending tickets while the cover is open?
No — it pauses. A printer that has reported cover open refuses every job, so retrying would only burn attempts and end with tickets out of retries for no reason. They stay queued and print themselves when it closes.
